My dog keeps licking herself. Does she need her anal glands expressed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 15 lbs

Kinsley isnt acting like her normal self. She keeps licking herself and I am guessing she may need her anal glands expressed, she has never had them done. She's eating drinking etc but just not wanting to go outside (which she usually loves) she's going potty as normal...she is my every thing I just moved out of state so need a new vet. Amoung a mountain of personal issues I'm dealing with. Thank you so very much.

If you think Kinsley Nicole has an anal gland problem, you may want to add some canned pumpkin to her food over a few weeks. It will make the stool more voluminous and it will press on the anal sacs as it comes our, hopefully emptying them. Should Kinsley still have problems after a while, you should schedule an anal sac expression with your new vet. It would be a great way to introduce yourself and her to the practice.
