My dog has phlegm in his throat and coughs. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Male | neutered | 10 years and 1 month old | 55 lbs

My dog sounds like he may have phlegm in his throat and every once in a while he tries to cough it up. I do not hear any wheezing or anything when he is sleeping and when awake. Sometimes you can tell he has the phglem and he will cough once to try and get it out.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Biggie. I am concerned that he has an upper respiratory tract infection based on the signs that you have described. He will need to see his veterinarian if his symptoms persist as he may require medication such as an antibiotic. Encourage him to eat and drink in the meantime. You can also turn the shower on and let the hot water run. Keep the door closed to allow the steam to build up. Then let Biggie in the bathroom. The warm humid air can help to ease congestion. I hope this information helps!
