My dog's bite wound is oozing pus. Does he need urgent vet care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | 8 months and 26 days old | 4 lbs

He was bit by dog and had a lump and wound.. Vet asked me to apply a cream and ice pack for a couple of days and if it didn't improve.. Remove it via syringe or cut. I just noticed pus coming out of it.. I have dressed it with betadine cotton n bandage. His appointment for removal is 2 days from now..should i take him tomorrow itself? Or can i wait for a couple of days? When can i remove the dressing? Thanks

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would recommend having this treated sooner rather than later and get in as soon as you can to have this taken care of. This appears to be an abscess and has ruptured. This needs to be drained and flushed out with an antiseptic solution as well as having him placed on oral antibiotics. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
