Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 1 month old
for the past few weeks, my mother's 7yr old Male cat has been defecating and now also urinating on her futon mattress. we have been covering it with plastic as a deterrent, keeping the litter box clean and removed a new litter box mat we thought he might not like. otherwise he has been acting normally and we have no idea why he is doing this.

I would highly recommen taking Chubbs in to your local vet for an examination. He needs to be checked to ensure he doesn't have a UTI first. If he does not, then he is likely soiling the house due to anxiety. The vet can treat for anxiety with medication if that is the cause. The one medication that has the most success for treating things like this, in my opinion, is Fluoxetine, which you can request for Chubbs if indicated. I hope this helps and best of luck with Chubbs and him soiling the home. I hope he stops doing this soon!
