My old hamster has multiple symptoms. Should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Exotic | Unknown - Exotic | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 6 months old

My Syrian hamster Elmo has lost weight, he's not really active at night, his skin is flaky and dry. His eyes also had crust around them when I checked on him yesterday, and he didn't want to drink and he seemed very clumsy. I'm really worried about him-he used to be so active and healthy. Should I take him to the vet? It costs a lot, and I don't want to take him and spend $100 for them to tell me he's just old(he's 2.5). Thank you

It does sound as if Elmo is very ill. If you want to determine what is going on and have potential treatment options then going to the vet will be the best plan. However, it is important to keep in mind that Elmo is a very advanced age for a hamster, normal life expectancy is 2 years and he has already exceeded this. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
