My dog chewed a rock, now her tooth is split and purple. Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 10 months and 2 days old | 66 lbs

Pharah's bottom left, to the back, third tooth from the fang has split in almost half but still hanging there. Do we need to take her to vet? The split is more on the side than middle. And it seems like bit of the top part has chipped off as well. You can see bit of purple in middle of split. She was playing with a rock (chewing it) yesterday, could it be from that???

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pharah. Yes, she will need to see her veterinarian. With the tooth broken in that manner, the root canal sounds exposed. This will be very painful for her. It will also allow an infection to develop within that tooth. She may need to have the tooth extracted. Most dogs do not shows signs of oral pain, so it may be difficult to tell based on her behavior at home. I suspect it is very painful though. I hope this information helps!
