Why is my dog's ear itchy, scabbing, bleeding, and she's vomiting?

2 year old female staff. bull terrier. Itching at left year causing scabbing and light bleeding, last night appearance of rash or possible redness from scratching, and the past two mornings she’s vomited once but has otherwise been acting and eating normally

If Daisy has been scratching at her ear excessively causing bleeding, this is a sign of an ear infection. Ear infections in dogs can be caused by ear mites, yeast, or bacteria, so you will need to make an appointment with her vet to get the cause diagnosed in order for her to receive the correct treatment. Give your vet a call today to make an appointment for her. As for the vomiting, it could be she has an upset stomach from a dietary change or eating something rotten, or a mild GI illness. I can give you a home remedy for that to see if it helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Ouch, poor Remington! You are correct - most ear infections in dogs stem from underlying allergies. Allergy issues in dogs mostly cause skin problems and ears are skin, after all. The allergies could be associated with environmental issues (atopy), food allergies or flea allergies. I can certainly see the discharge and swelling in Remington's ear. Her excessive scratching obviously indicates that she's quite uncomfortable. Allergy issues cause dogs to itch, which damages the skin barrier and then leads to ear infections from an overgrowth of yeast and/or bacteria in the ear canal. There are no effective over the counter treatments for ear infections. At this point, I recommend taking Remington to her vet for an exam and ear cytology. Your vet will be able to look at her ear discharge under a microscope to determine the type of infection present, and will then prescribe an appropriate medication based on those results. Until you get to the vet, consider putting an e-collar (cone) on Rem

Ear infections can be caused by bacterial or fungal infection, or parasitic infections (like ear mites, as you mentioned) or a combination of these, and can be associated with dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. Daisy needs to see a vet to have an ear swab done. Your vet can look at the sample under the microscope and treat appropriately based on what is found. Your vet will also need to examine the ear with a scope to see if the ear drum is intact, as some medications cannot be used safely if the eardrum is ruptured. Ear infections can be very painful, and can sometimes progress to include the middle or inner ear, where they can cause neurologic signs or permanent hearing loss. Please book an appointment to have Daisy seen as soon as possible to help get her feeling better.

As long as Scout is bright, alert and eating, you can try to manage the GI signs at home. Fast him for 24 hours to give his GI tract a rest. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. If he doesn't vomit, feed until the stool is normal before transitioning slowly to his regular diet. If he vomits or if the diarrhea does not resolve, see your veterinarian. If he develops lethargy or loses his appetite, see your vet. The head shaking and scratching at his ears may indicate ear infection. Scout may end up seeing the veterinarian regardless. An ear swab can be examined to diagnose yeast or bacterial infection in his ears.

Hello, my 3 years old Schnauzer mini has scabs in both her ears and I am concerned as I never saw anything like this before. Can I ask for an advice what to do?
This can be a sign of an ear infection. Luna could be scratching at her ears causing them to bleed then scab. Ear infections in dogs can be caused by yeast or bacteria. I would have her seen by a vet today to get this diagnosed and treated. Any ear problem needs to be checked out promptly by a vet as leaving it untreated can lead to hearing loss. I hope this helps!

It sounds like Fen could have an ear infection. Ear infections in dogs can be caused by ear mites, yeast, or bacteria. You will need to make her an appointment with a vet. The two problems (gastrointestinal signs and ear canal infection/inflammation) may be related as both of them may be caused by an allergy. Most common ones are usually caused by food , flea and environmental causes. Ear canal inflammation, infection can be treated easily by applying some medicated (antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications) ear drops. If the problem keeps coming back, allergic disease can be investigated with some skin and blood tests.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can possibly be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar is useful as well to avoid any scratching (as you have used). My dog has a quarter size scab behind her ear on her neck any thoughts
This scab could be due to her excessively scratching at her ear. This excessive scratching could be due to an ear infection, allergies, or fleas. If she isn't up to date on her flea medications, I would give her a spot on treatment such as Advantage or Revolution. If she is up to date on her flea medication, I would take her into the vet tomorrow for an exam. The vet can determine if she has a medical cause behind the scab, such as an ear infection or allergies, and can treat accordingly.

Those brown clumps could also be ear mites, which itch intensely and can cause a dog to injure themselves by scratching and shaking their head. It could also be some kind of ear infection or other problem. I recommend getting her checked at your vet as soon as possible to have her ear checked to determine why she's scratching so hard and get her treated so she (and you) can get some relief soon.

Those little pustules are likely a bacterial infection. However, there is usually an underlying problem such as environmental allergies or fleas or food allergies that tend to trigger these infections. I would definitely recommend that she be evaluated by a veterinarian soon. They will likely recommend medication for the ear and the skin and discuss ways to help treat the underlying problem (most common would be environmental allergies).
