Why does my neutered cat knead, kick legs, then lick himself?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 8 months old

My male cat (4 years old) is kneading with his front paws and while doing this his back legs either kick or just move around spasm like. After that he will start to lick. He has been neutered. I read that this could be a sign of fleas but he doesn’t go outside at all. Thank you! -overly worried cat Mom

From reading your description, I think I know what Apollo is doing and it's something that may make you a little grossed out. It could be that he is masturbating. Even neutered cats will do this because it feels good, and the behavior is shown by kneading the front paws and movement from the back legs including kicking them out or appearing to have spasm like motions. He's cleaning himself after he is done. I'd be concerned about fleas if he was scratching a lot, overgrooming, and losing fur along his back by his tail and on his stomach. You can get him to stop this behavior by distracting him when he starts with a toy or treat, or picking him up and moving him. I hope this helps!
