Could a pork bone cause a dog's sudden death, or was it illness?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Female | spayed | 12 years and 5 months old | 13 lbs

My miniature pinscher died suddenly Monday morning without warning. She had little cysts all over her body and had been on corticosteroids for two years. My sister blames me for her death as we had given her a pork bone the night before. However I was reading up on hemoangiosarcomas which can cause a dog to die suddenly if one of the Tumors were to rupture in the spleen causing internal bleeding. My question is if the pork bone splintered would she have died immediately or not?

First off, I'm very sorry Daisy died suddenly! Certainly a hemangiosarcoma can rupture suddenly, leading to death quickly. Bones are never good to give to dogs, especially cooked bones, but I don't believe that a splintered pork bone would cause a dog to die immediately. I suppose there is a chance if it was a big bone and a large piece punctured the GI tract, but you'd more likely see signs first like anorexia, vomiting, lethargy, blood in the feces, and the dog acting very ill. Unfortunately I can't say for certain without seeing her, but you can take her body into a vet for a necropsy (an autopsy for dogs). This may provide some answers as to why she has passed away suddenly. Again, I'm sorry for your loss!
