Is Benadryl safe for my pregnant dog experiencing skin allergies?

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 65 lbs

My dog has allergies to plants and she breaks out. I have taken her to the vet previously and was told I could give her benadryl. I think she might be pregnant. Is it okay for me to give her benadryl?

I would not give benadryl to Nova if there is a chance she could be pregnant, as it's not recommended for use pregnant animals. You will need to take her into her vet if she's suffering from a break out currently. The vet may be able to determine if she's pregnant or not (she would need to be at least three weeks along), and what medication, if any, is safe to give her. Best of luck.

Benadryl is safe in pregnant dogs, a common dosage is 1mg per pound of body weight. Nova would need around 65mg. I would do this once, but if the hives do not respond, then I would have her checked out by a vet.

No you should not give any medications and especially human medications whilst pregnant. Your vet may be able to investigate the underlying causes and prescribe safe treatment for her if infections or parasites are present

I have a nursing dog that has allergies and she's having a reaction she takes Benadryl but I'm not for sure if she can take it while she's nursing the puppies are 1 week old
Hi there. It's not recommended to give Benadryl or other antihistamines to nursing females, as the drug is passed through the milk and is not good for the babies to be exposed to. There unfortunately isn't much you can give right now without affecting the pups. You could try bathing her in an aloe and oatmeal dog shampoo to see if this helps to soothe her skin a bit, as this shouldn't be harmful.

Can my pregnant dog take excel allergy relief medicine
No, I would not give this to Lol Bit. It contains diphenhydramine, which shouldn't be given to pregnant dogs. I've read the label of excel as well, and it doesn't say it's safe to give to pregnant dogs. I would speak to your vet about Lol Bit's current symptoms, and they can prescribe a safe medication for her if needed.

My boxer is 7 weeks pregnant and has came out in hives. Can I give her something for it?
Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about your dog. Unless this is a life-threatening reaction, I wouldn't advise using any drugs while she is pregnant. If she develops itching, trouble breathing, pale membranes, vomiting or other signs, I would advise contacting your veterinarian or a local emergency veterinarian for advice. Drug use during pregnancy should be avoided at all costs in my opinion. Maybe trying a hypoallergenic oatmeal shampoo and leaving the lather on her for 10 minutes may help ease the situation. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Short answer is yes. However, it is important to note that without treating the underlying allergy component, this will continue to occur. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then yo

No - unfortunately, antihistamines are not safe to be used during pregnancy. You can try bathing her in an aloe and oatmeal dog shampoo to see if this helps a bit, as this shouldn't harm her or the puppies. If this doesn't help, I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam - he/she can discuss prescription medication options that can be used to help with itching or other skin problems while she is pregnant.

You can try to give her Benadryl tablets once a day although chances are it will not help a lot unless it is an acute allergic reaction. you should also treat her for fleas as this is the most common cause of itchiness in that area of the body

Benadryl can be given to dogs to treat allergies but it is always best to check with your vet before giving medications. Since your vet knows your dogs complete medical history, he/she would know if there is a contraindication to giving any medications. Dogs with allergies can also develop secondary bacterial infection that may require an antibiotic, corticosteroid, and/or an anti-histamine to treat. If her signs persist or worsen then she should be seen by a vet to determine the best way to treat. There is also an allergy medication called Apoquel that works very well in controlling allergies in dogs. You could also switch to a completely hypoallergenic diet, like z/d, and see if that helps, too. Bathing her with a medicated dog shampoo, like Epi-Soothe, may also help.

No, I would not give this to Lexi. It's never recommended to self treat your dog, as you may accidentally do harm to them. In addition, it may not be safe to give to her based on her health status. Finally, it may not be the appropriate drug for her symptoms. Because the experts at Boop by Petco cannot see Lexi in person, it is illegal for us to say if a drug is safe to give to her or not. I recommend giving your vet a call to see if they feel it's safe to give her Benadryl. They can give you the correct dose if they feel it's safe.
