Why is my dog limping and lifting her leg without showing pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 1lb

My dog has been kind of limping. I have been noticing this in the past few day. I have checked her around and she shows no sign of discomfort or pain. However, she lifted her leg every once in while. What could this be?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. There are many things that can lead to limping. The limping could be secondary to trauma, a strain / sprain, dislocating knee cap (common in this size of a dog and breed, etc. If the limping continues, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Leia so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would also recommend having x-rays taken of her leg to help rule out other conditions that could be causing the lameness. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
