Hi doc! I’m having a flea issue. My apartment complex can’t spray the grass, and it is currently infested. My dog has gotten fleas 3 times In the last month or so. He’s on sentinel which kills flea eggs, and has gotten flea baths, but is there anything else I can do? He has super sensitive skin and I feel so bad when I see how red it is getting. I was thinking Nexgard, but wanted a second opinion first.

Unfortunately fleas do not live on the dog, but only hop on to feed and then they hop off and stay in his environment (your apartment!) until it is time to feed again. So you need to treat all pets in the household as well as the environment (which contains the fleas, their eggs and larvae). Flea treatment: 1) Get some flea medication such as a Flea spray or a spot on from a pet shop or your veterinarian and apply monthly (which you have done already) 2) get flea powder, put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum your house and furniture and also non-carpeted areas frequently to remove flea larvae and eggs which live off house dust., Dispose of the bag in the trash outside. Hot-wash all the pet's bedding, If you do this diligently for a few months you will get rid of the fleas. Flea products: Spot-ons: Advantage, Advantix Advantage Multi Frontline (ticks as well) Bravecto spot on (ticks as well) - for cats, in tablet form for dogs Nexgard Revolution Tablets: comfortis (will only kill fleas once) Collar: Seresto (ticks as well) House spray: Indoorex

I recommend using a monthly flea preventative. You can purchase Advantage 2 at PetCo. I’ve found this product to be very effective. You can also get a monthly oral flea and heartworm preventative from your veterinarian. I would also vacuum your house often to clean up any that are not on the dog. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Ka$h.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You need contact your vet for flea preventions they carry. Over the counter medications do not work. You must also treat all pets in the home every 30 days for at least 3 months in a row. I would also pick up a house flea spray. Use the product in every room of the house and vacuum well after it dries. Throw out the bag (or clean the canister if bagless) because fleas can live inside. If you follow the above steps, you should be flea free in the next few months. Good luck!
