Why does my 2-month-old puppy have a hard golf-ball lump on his neck?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 7 days old | 10 lbs

Hi, my new puppy has developed a brand new lump in his neck yesterday, it’s pretty big. When I touch it, it is hard and about the size of a golf ball. It doesn’t seem to bother him or hurt him, but I would like to get an explanation of what this is from or what it is. He is only 2 months old and shouldn’t have a huge lump on the back of his neck (by his shoulder blades)

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry Cooper has a lump over his neck! it is hard to say exactly what the cause is without examining Cooper first, but if he recently had a vaccine in that area, it may be an inflammatory reaction due to the vaccine that was given. There are other causes as well much as a small tumor or other mass. I would recommend Cooper see his veterinarian for a closure inspection and to have a sample of the mass taken to determine what it is and if it needs to be removed or not. I hope this helps and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
