Dog I'm sitting has a bleeding, swollen butt. Should I call vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

I’m dog sitting a dog and all of a sudden I noticed drops of blood on the carpet. Concerned I checked all over his body and found no wounds. I noticed he was bleeding from his butt and I’m really scared that he is hurt. This is gross but I attached a photo of his butthole. It’s puffy and bleeding. What’s wrong and should I take him to a vet before his owner comes home?

Ouch, poor Dudley! It could be he has growth on his anus or his anal sacs could be impacted and infected. Yes, definitely take him into a vet before his owner comes home. The vet can diagnose what is causing this swelling and bleeding, and can treat him for it. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

Hello. This is most likely an anal gland that became infected & ruptured. It could also be a bite wound, but this is a common presentation of a ruptured anal gland. Summer needs to see her veterinarian to have the area cleaned up & antibiotics will most likely be prescribed. She should heal quickly once treatment is started. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

It is possible that what you are seeing is a ruptured anal gland. Dogs have anal glands on either side of the anus that normally secrete a fluid when dogs defecate. If an anal gland does not normally empty, it can abscess and rupture externally (which often results in bleeding adjacent to the anus). I am attaching a link to a handout on anal glands below. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=625 I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Bok to see if that is what is going on. Anal gland ruptures sometimes need to be expressed or flushed, but often are able to be resolved with antibiotics and pain medications. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. My dog Oliver’s butthole is extremely swollen and he keeps dragging it along the carpet. So much so that now both his butt and his balls are being rubbed raw, what can I do to help him? And should he be seen immediately?
Since he is so uncomfortable, he should be seen as soon as possible. If your veterinarian is unavailable, consider the nearest veterinary ER. He may have impacted anal glands that may be starting to abscess. They should be expressed (emptied). He may need antibiotics for infection and anti-inflammatory medication for pain management. If he is licking, place an e-collar (cone) on him. Diapers can be used to protect his sensitive bits from further abrasion.

Her butt is all swollen and has a small bump near it.i squeezed the bump and bloody clear stuff came out of it. No vets are open right now and j can't afford the vet till my next paycheck. Please help.
I am suspicious that Quora may have an anal sac abscess. These situations usually need antibiotics to resolve. Thank you for providing pictures of Madden's anus for me to see. From the pictures, it could be that he has a rectal prolapse, or he could have impacted anal sacs causing this redness and swelling. The best thing to do is take him into a vet as soon as possible. The vet can diagnose what is causing this redness and swelling, and can treat him for it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

hi so my 3 year old pug Chihuahua mix has a lump on her right butt bone area she had parco before h dont know if that could have anything to do with it . but she already had it opened and we drained some of the fluid and it was like a brownish color
It sounds like this could be an abscess, but if there is brownish fluid and the lump was located right near her anus, I would be concerned that Chata had an impacted anal sac and that was opened. I would take her into the vet immediately. This area needs to be flushed and cleaned sterilely, and she will likely need antibiotics to prevent infection. Please take Chata into a vet now.

My dog has had diarrhea for the past couple of days and then I noticed he would kick around him bum area very often and I noticed it was swollen, is there anything I can do at. Home to help or do I need to seek medical attention?
Since the diarrhea has lasted for 48 hours, he should be seen by your veterinarian. The swelling could be an anal gland abscess or a tumor. An abscess will need to be lanced and drained. A tumor should be aspirated or biopsied to collect samples for pathology. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking until he sees the doctor. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Night may go home with a bland diet, antibiotics and pain medication depending on the diagnosis.

My dogs anus has started bleeding but not sure why. There are no vets around where we live. What do I do and what is it?
Based on the location, I am concerned that the left anal sac may be the cause for the bleeding. Dogs can develop anal sac abscesses, which is an infection of the anal sac (there are two located at the margin of the anus) that can rupture to the outside. These can be painful and will often require antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication to manage pain and allow healing. The other potential is an anal sac mass. Due to Ben's age I would be very concerned for this. Unfortunately there is not much that can be done from home for either of these conditions. It would be recommended to try to find the closest veterinarian to you and have Ben seen. If it is an anal sac mass, these often require surgery and have the potential to be malignant cancers.

My dog has swelling near her anus. She also is warm to the touch on her back end and down under the swelling. Should I take her to the vet now or can I wait until the morning? What could be wrong?
Swelling near the anus are usually secondary to a problem with the anal sac, such as an impaction, abscess or even cancer. It could also be secondary to something entirely different, such as an insect bite or a cyst. The vast majority of the time, these are not emergencies. So as long as Gidget is otherwise acting normally, you can call your veterinarian in the morning. A good physical exam will likely lead to a preliminary diagnosis and possible treatment. Other tests your veterinarian could do include aspirating the swelling to see what it contains. Good luck and I hope Gidget feels better soon. Thank you for using pet coach.

Ouch, poor Early! If you are seeing blood and pus along with brown fluid, it sounds like his anal sacs may have become infected and have now ruptured. With the presence of pus, there isn't anything you can do at home for him. I would take him into a vet as soon as possible to have this area cleaned and examined. If his anal sac has ruptured, it will need to be sutured closed and he will need antibiotics for infection.
