My cat pulled her stitches out. Will her open wound heal on its own?

My 2.5yrs old cat has undergone ABC ON 15.5.18 she has stripped her stitches it bleeded a little but no more it os bleeding. But the skin is not set together. Should I restitch her wound? Or will it heal herself?

Without seeing a picture of Dory's incision, I cannot tell you for sure if it needs to be stitched again or not. I strongly advise you do not try to stitch it yourself! This will be very painful to her, stitching the incision requires sedatives that can only be administer by a vet. If she had the stitches on the 15th of this month, then the incision likely isn't healed as it takes at least 10-14 days for it to heal fully. I would take her back into her vet to have the incision examined and stitched closed again. Best of luck.

Unfortunately, at least 10 days with stitches on are required for complete healing. I recommend to bring your cat to the vet to replace the missing suture asap. In the meantime and after replacing the sutures, avoid licking or scratching by using a buster or a postoperative body (https://www.amazon.com/Kruuse-Buster-Body-Black-3X-Small/dp/B00Z0U6EH8). My cat got two stitches today and she pulled one up a little as you can tell from the image and it’s bleeding a little bit it wasn’t bleeding before the stitches at all. I tried the e-come but she got it off like 5x times so I did a shirt around her
Thank you for the picture, it really helps with my answer. The incision still looks like it's together, so you don't need to rush Ella into a vet immediately. Just keep her quiet, and monitor it daily. If the incision comes apart, there is excessive bleeding, it appears infected, or that stitch falls out, have her seen by a vet. I hope this helps.

Poor Lilly! If she was missing all day, she could have done something to cause the wound to open up more. When a cat has a wound and is on medication, it's best to keep her confined to allow her to heal correctly. I see she has stitches, and cats with stitches need to be kept quiet so the area can heal properly. I would keep her indoors while this wound is healing to prevent her from opening it up more, as well as disappearing and potentially missing times when she needs to take her medications. Set up a litter box inside for her along with food and water. Once the wound is fully healed and her stitches are removed, she can start going back outside. I hope this helps!

My cat had surgery on Friday for a growth removal on her face. She just ripped out one of her stitches but it's not bleeding or leaking and she doesn't seem to be in pain. She doesn't really scratch or lick it and doesn't move around a lot either
Hi there. Often, losing a single suture a few days after surgery isn't a huge deal, especially if the incision still appears to be closed and there is no bleeding or drainage. But it's hard to say if this is a problem or not without being able to see it. If you want to, you can post a photo of the incision for us to look at - we may be able to give you a better idea of whether it needs any treatment.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Gita. Six days is quite early to have her sutures removed. However, maybe it was suspected that she was having a reaction to the suture material or that they were contributing to the infection. It is possible for her wound to heal, but it will be more difficult without the sutures. She must be kept from licking the surgical site and her movements need to limited. No running, jumping or playing. I hope this information helps!

Hi - my cat got a mast cell tumor removed three days ago. He scratched near the incision and i think pulled the incision apart enough to loosen the stitches. Now it looks like the wound is coming apart. What should I do?
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Neptune. Poor kitty! That does look open and irritated, and think he needs to see a vet now to have this restitched. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Hello! My cats stiches look like this. We can't keep him from messing up his stiches. His vet said its normal for him to remove it and there is no problem with it but i doubt it. What do you think? Does he need to have another set of stiches? Thank
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! While he may not need more stitches, he does need further evaluation of the incision as there is likely an infection. More stitches may be needed based on a closer examination. I do recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least, antibiotics are likely going to be prescribed. I highly recommend you use an e-collar to prevent him from getting to his incision. My cat recently had a wound at the base of his spine stitched 10 days ago. The stitches have now fell apart and there is a raw gaping wound, with slight seepage.
I am sorry to hear that TJ has this going on. I am worried that the wound is infected. Stitches often break down if there is an infection. I would highly encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible. In the meantime you can use a warm water and Epsom salts compress to keep the area clean. My cat has been spayed this past Saturday and seems absolutely fine but has pulled 1 or 2 of her sutures. There’s no redness that I can tell or discharge, what should I do?
Just make sure you do not see any opening of the incision, increased redness, bleeding, or discharge. If not, and the incision remains closed, you can closely monitor. If open, or any of the signs above, she may need the incision closed again or cultured for infection. Does she have an e collar on? If not she needs to wear one until the sutures come out to prevent further issues. If she is wearing one, and can reach around it, she will need a longer one (or if its a soft collar she will need a firm collar). I hope this helps and thank you for using Petcaoch!

The photo didn't come through. A small amount of spotting can be normal and generally the incisions on cats heal quickly even if they open up a little. As long as he's eating and acting normal I'm not overly concerned about this. Keeping the cone on will prevent his licking the area and it will heal more quickly. Should the incision look very red or have a bad odor then I would take him back to have it checked. I expect though that it will improve every day.
