My senior dog has an anal bulge & constipation. Any non-surgical help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 8 lbs

I have a 13-14 year old Maltese mix with a shihzu and he’s not neutered and has never had any health problems before despite his age. He had been constipated and a bulge on the side of his anus and under his tail. He doesn’t seem to be in pain or any difference in his behavior. I’m afraid it’s a perineal hernia, but I’m not sure. I’ve read that the treatment is surgery and that’s not an option for me due to cost. Is there any natural medication or anything else I can do?

Ideally, Pepa should be examined by your veterinarian for a definitive diagnosis. A hernia is a possibility. Anal gland issues or an enlarged prostate are also concerns. These last two are likely less expensive to treat than hernia surgery, but without a diagnosis, it is difficult to say with any certainty. Discuss treatment options with your veterinarian after a physical exam.
