Dog's anal area red, swollen after surgery. Infection or emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 10 years and 6 months old | 12.5 lbs

Chip had BL anal sacculectomy on 03/16/18. On 03/30/18 surgeon said he was healed/no infection. Today, I noticed a red, swollen area to the right, and it's uncomfortable to couch. Area was fine until now. He has been eating normally but scooting 1-2x. Does this look like an infection or hot spot? Does this warrant a visit to the emergency vet or can I wait until Monday to contact his surgeon or regular vet? Can anything be done now? Photos right after surgery and today attached

This does look swollen and very angry. There is a possibility that there is infection in the wound. You should take Chip to your vet for a recheck on Monday. I do not think this is an emergency unless your dog runs a fever ( above 103 F) or there is a discharge from the wound.
