Is it safe for my puppy to stay in a smoker's house for two weeks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 23 lbs

My husband and I are planning on visiting home to Maryland in a month and we want to take our puppy with us. The owner of the house my mom lives in does not allow dogs so our puppy can’t stay there and the only other option we have is my husband’s parents house. The problem is they smoke a lot in the house. They have been smoking in that house for over 20 years and I’m afraid if we leave our puppy to stay there for two weeks she will end up getting sick and possibly get cancer. What should I do?

It is not likely that she will get cancer or get sick from staying in a smoker's household for two weeks. While it is not healthy, there are many dogs and cats staying in households where people smoke. The other possibility is to find a sitter who will keep your dog for the two weeks while you are gone or a kennel.
