Should I feed my active small puppy more food for extra calories?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 month and 22 days old | 22 lbs

I’m feeding Charlie with Purina Pro Plan: Initial Protection for puppies of small breed. He weights about 5 pounds and according to the label I should give him 1 cup per day. Since the last few days is getting very active and playful and runs a lot around the house, should I increase the amount of food to make up for the extra calories he’s burning?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Charlie needs around 300-400 calories per day for his weight and age (considering he is a puppy) so I would adjust the cups per day keeping this in mind. As he continues to get older and his weight increases, I would recommend continuing to follow the instructions on the food package label. I hope this helps and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
