What to do if I found a newborn kitten and its feral mom ran off?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, I went to mow my lawn and discovered a newborn kitten in a hollow under the lawn mower in my shed. She doesn't have her eyes open yet. I have seen the mama in my backyard before, but she is feral and took off as soon as I opened the door. I set up a box with blankets and a pop bottle filled with hot water to keep the kitten warm, and put it in the shed. Mama came back and saw me fussing around in the shed, then took off again. There is just the one kitten, and I've waited around for a while.

Stay away from the shed and mama will come in a quiet moment and either move the kitten or stay and take care of it there. The longer you stay around the shed, the more likely she is to abandon the kitten,
