Why did my puppy poop a white worm after deworming medicine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 13 days old | 9 lbs

I had given my 6 week old puppy Nemocid as a part of his deworming process. When he went poop in the evening before going to bed I noticed a noodle like white object along with his stool which I had never seen before. The white thing didn't seem to move or anything. Is it the dead worm result of the deworming medicine? Or is it a side effect? Should be worried?[Note: I've attached a picture of his stool, hope its alright]

Hello there! I am so glad that you are keeping up with deworming in your puppy because that is so important for their health! From the picture that looks like it is probably a roundworm. It's possible it could also be a hookworm. This can be a normal occurrence after deworming. And I would recommend deworming again in 2 weeks. No need to be concerned. It's a good thing you gave Casper this medication. I hope this helps ease your mind. I wish you and Casper all the best!

I would recommend that you take the puppies to the vet immediately for evaluation. This medication is pyrantel, and is incredibly safe for use in puppies, so it is unlikely that the symptoms you are seeing are related to the medication or a reaction to it. I would be concerned that they may have inhaled some of the medication or may have inhaled some vomit. Rarely, puppies with very large worm burdens will have issues in the days following deworming treatment as the worms die inside their intestines. After a thorough examination, the vet may recommend x-rays or bloodwork so they can determine the best course of treatment for the puppies.
