Why isn't my male dog interested in my female dog's first heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Female | unspayed | 10 months and 1 day old | 8 lbs

My puppy is 9 months and she's 7 days into her first heat cycle (she started bleeding 7 days ago) and we have an 8 year old male dog who is her father, we don´t want them to mate and we plan on spaying her after this. I wonder why our male dog hasn't tried to mount her, we don´t want it to happen but it's a bit strange that he doesn't show any interest at all, doesn't even sniff her... should I be worried? Or is this normal and I should just keep them apart?

I would just keep them apart. He could suddenly become interested when she gets into a different part of her heat cycle and you may not be around to see it happen. With him being her father, you definitely don't want them to mate as their puppies could have a lot of health problems. I would probably keep them separated for a month to be extra safe. I hope this helps!
