My dog has raw, bleeding paws and limps. How can I help his pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Male | neutered | 12 years and 9 months old | 24 lbs

My dog got loose 2 nights ago. He was gone all night. Fortunately I was able to find him yesterday morning, but his poor paws are rubbed raw and the nails are worn down to the blood vessel in them. He is limping around like it hurts to walk on them. What can I use to help alleviate the pain for him? Is Dermablast or another lidocaine wound spray okay as long as he isn’t licking it? Is there anything else I should be doing for them? I am a nurse, I had them bandaged overnight but open during day

Based on the injuries you are describing I would be concerned that Flick was hit by a car while he was loose. I would recommend taking him to the vet to have his injuries examined. He will likely need pain medication as well as some antibiotics to help his wounds heal. A lidocaine wound spray is ok for short term use as long as Flick doesn’t lick it off. I hope this helps.
