Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 10 years and 5 months old | 3.6 lbs
Just returned from vet. Doctor said she is probably having a mild reaction to the rabies vaccine. Didn’t see any apparent hives, just some pink skin on face. Didn’t want to give a steroid yet, advised 1.4mls of Benadryl 3 times a day through the weekend. Sent me home with two doses of prednisolone in case she gets large hives. How dangerous is prednisolone should we need to use it? Also, how long is it in the dogs system?

A short course of predisone is unlikely to have any adverse effects in an otherwise healthy dog but may be of more risk if she has other, underlying health conditions? It may however reduce the efficacy of the vaccine and limit the protection this gives her against rabies. It would be worth telephoning the clinic to assess the risks and benefits of her particular case if she has a complicated medial history
