My senior dog's back legs are weak. How can I help him walk again?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 12 years and 11 months old | 80 lbs

My dog who is almost 13 years old now has been having a hard time with his back legs getting weaker and weaker, till recently he can't get up at all by himself and really having trouble walking. Is there anything that can help him get some strength back in his back legs.

At this age dogs usually suffer from painful arthritis of the hips. The pain makes them use their hind legs less and therefore the muscles atrophy. You should take Ryder to your vet for an exam, and mention the weakness in the hind legs. Your vet can prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication which will help with pain and should make Ryder more happy to get up and exercise. This will train his leg muscles and it will be much easier for him to get up and walk.
