My baby sulcata has sores on its plastron. How do I treat them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I just got a three month old baby sulcata and he seems to have 3 small sores or lesions on his plastron. he's in a 40 gal tank with orchid bark. temps are 75-90 (gradient) and I soak him once a day. He has a UV light and is also getting calcium as every meal. I am overwhelmed with the abundance of misinformation I am finding on sulcata care. He eats dark leafy greens at the moment along with some grasses. He's not lethargic at all. Any ideas?

Decrease soaks to about 3 times a week for 10-15 minutes at a time. The daily soaks may promote bacterial or fungal growth if he doesn't dry off completely. Check the enclosure for any rough or sharp surfaces that he may scrape his plastron on. Small scrapes or abrasions will open him up to potential infection. Cleanse the area daily with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution and allow to dry thoroughly. If the spots do not resolve or worsen, have Tony examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles. Review care information at the link below.
