My rescued kitten's tail wound looks fresh. Does it need care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 23 days old | 1.2 lbs

We rescued a kitten that we didn’t know until after we got her - that she’s missing half her tail. When we got her a few days ago it looked scabbed over - no sign of infection. I gave her a luke warm bath this morning and after the bath it looked like a “fresher” wound. No blood, maybe a bit of clear discharge. She doesn’t seem to be in any pain and it doesn’t bother her at all. I just wondered if there’s anything else we should be doing? Bandaging? A pet-version of neosporin? Etc. Thank you!!

You will need to see a vet as it will likely need amputation past the infected part to get to healthy tissue. The skin is growing into the side instead or around the tip and the surgery can correct that and have it healed quickly. It is safe to put regular neosporin on it but do not let her lick it and you can keep it clean with soap and water until you get her seen
