My ferret has a smelly, tangled coat with bald spots. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | neutered | 1lb

I just adopted 2 ferrets, 4 yo, both neutered males. The larger, darker one has a smooth, soft coat. The smaller, pale one has a coarse, tangled, smelly coat with bald spots that he keeps chewing at. I know that I need to get him to the vet, but what can I do to make him more comfortable in the meantime?

I would be concerned that Loki has fleas or possibly skin mites or a skin infection. I would keep him separated from the other ferret for now in case this is something contagious. I agree that Loki needs to be seen by a vet. I. The meantime try bathing him with a ferret or kitten shampoo and try to comb or brush out his coat. This may help to keep him more comfortable. Best of luck and congrats on your new ferrets!
