Dog back injury: When can she run, jump, and play normally again?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 years and 1 month old | 51 lbs

Kiley appeared to be in pain and not able to get on the bed or couch so we took her to the vet on monday she got muscle relaxers and prednisone for an apparent back injury (tissue), we are not sure how this happened. I was wondering about how long it would take for her to be running playing jumping and getting up on the bed/couch again like her normal self? Shes 5 years old. Never had anything like this before. On a positive note, the prednisone is helping her allergies and itching so much!!!

She really shouldn't be jumping, running, or playing for 2-3 weeks to allow her back time to heal. Even if the medicine makes her feel better, you should try to keep her from running and jumping so she doesn't re-injure herself. Glad the prednisone is helping her allergies. If she needs to be on long term allergy medications then you cold talk to your vet about trying Cytopoint or Apoquel.
