My dog's paw wound is getting bigger and not healing. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Vizsla | Female | spayed | 3 years and 5 months old | 50 lbs

Hi! We've been bandaging and cleaning this wound on our Vizsla's back paw for several weeks. It was small initially, but has since increased in size. Any idea what it is? We think it was caused by running or hiking through the woods.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Ember. If her wound has been present for several weeks and is increasing in size, then she will need to see her veterinarian. She will likely need an oral antibiotic. In the meantime, stop bandaging the wound to allow it dry out. Be sure to prevent her from licking the area with an E-collar. She likely injured herself as you mentioned, but there other more rare causes of non-healing skin wounds. I hope this information helps!
