Why is my vet recommending a 4-week phenobarbital test for my pet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | spayed | 7 years and 11 months old | 19 lbs

My pet started phenobarbital 3 weeks ago. We had our two week phenobarbital level testing last week with no real concern in levels. I spoke with the vet today and they are saying we need to come back for a 4 week level testing before more pheno is prescribed. I'm not seeing where this is a common practice. I see 10-15 days and then every 6 months if there are no issues.

Everyone is different and it can always changed based on clinical response. I actually do testing at 30 days as the drug takes some time to fully get in their system. I check a chemistry panel every 6 months and actually repeated the phenol level if there is a change in seizures occurring after that
