Why are popsicle sticks dangerous for dogs, unlike natural sticks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Kelpie | Female | spayed | 3 years and 11 months old | 51 lbs

I’m wondering why popsicle sticks seem to be bad for dogs to swallow/chew (as per google after my recent having to remove one from Whispers mouth), but dogs are obviously around sticks all the time/able to/do chew sticks. Why are popsicle sticks a problem and normal sticks less of a concern??

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Deep thought provoking question! I would say for 2 reasons 1) because they are small and can get lodge in the back of the throat or the esophagus and 2) they are MORE likely to be swallowed whole because they taste delicious due to the ice cream or Popsicle that was on it! Have a great day!
