My overweight double-coated dog overheats. Should I shave her coat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 1 month old | 114 lbs

My dog is 34 pounds overweight according to our vet. We are currently putting her science hill's active fitness and cutting back on table scraps 100%. However, we are also trying to increase her exercise and she gets overheated very easily. She is a great pyr mixed with lab and inherited the thick double coat. We live in TN so it is hot and very humid. Should we shave to help her cool down? She pants all the time and seems to have trouble breathing (maybe due to the weight)

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sophie. Great job on committing to weight loss with her! She will feel much better and potentially even live longer. Yes, shaving her coat will help to keep her cooler. I would also recommend exercising her very early in the mornings or late in the evenings to avoid as much heat as possible. You can also buy a product known as a swamp cooler. You soak the coat in cold water and then put it on the dog. It helps keep them cool throughout a walk. Start slow and easy. If she is otherwise healthy, the breathing difficulty is likely related to her weight. As you build up her stamina and she loses weight, this should improve. I hope this information helps!
