How to remove ticks from my dog's ear and prevent future ones?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Female | spayed | 8 years old

Hi my dog is an outside dog. She had a flea and tick collar on her but recently as I was looking over her I noticed she has two ticks in her ear. What’s the best way to remove them and how to I prevent her from getting more.

Take tweezers, put then on the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull straight up. Do not worry if the head breaks off and stays in the skin. The body will get rid of it within a few weeks. Best prevention for ticks is either a spot on that prevents ticks or fleas or a preventive chew such as Bravecto or Nexgard.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I recommend using tweezers to remove the tick by grasping it at the head of the tick and pulling it out of the skin. Always be sure that the entire tick has been removed. To prevent future ticks, I recommend either a monthly topical preventative such as Frontline or K9 Advantix, an oral preventative such as Nexgard or Bravecto, or a flea and tick preventative collar such as the Seresto collar. I hope this is helpful!
