Why is my unspayed cat's vaginal area black with discharge and hiding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 11 months old | 15 lbs

My cat is 6 years old. I noticed her fur around her vagina has become black. It looks like something is leaking/discharging. She isn't using her litterbox, but she will urinate on the rug. She's been acting quiet and is hiding under the bed. She is still eating and drinking, but not as active as before. I don't see any blood in her urine. I'm worried and want to know why her vaginal area is like this. Please help.

This is a concern, especially since she is not using the litter box and hiding. As Mia is not spayed, there is a possibility that she has a uterine infection, which could cause sepsis, Please take Mia to your vet ASAP for an exam. Your vet will want to do an x-ray or ultrasound to check her uterus. If she has a uterine infection (pyometra) then she will need surgery.
