Can I give my dog human pain meds for hip dysplasia and knee issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 years and 1 month old

My dog, Tasha, 97 lbs., has Hip Dysplasia, and Knee problems. Mostly the left leg. She is unable to run, without causing pain in her left Hip. Both hips are affected. She is 5 yrs. old. I can't afford Vet medications, so what Human pills can I give her for the rest of her life. It is very hard to stop her from running with my other, active, dog. They are in a fenced-off acre - not tied up.

I'm so sorry to hear that Tasha is so painful. My best recommendation is to discuss generic pain medications that can be called into a human pharmacy with your veterinarian. There are a few human medications that we can use in dogs, but they are all by prescription, so your vet would need to prescribe them for Tasha. In the US, we most commonly use Meloxicam as a prescription human generic pain medication for dogs. I am attaching a handout below with more information on pain medications for arthritis. https://www.vin.com/veterinarypartner/default.aspx?pid=19239&species=All&id=4951467 Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
