My cat has a skin tear from a hair mat. He's licking it, what to do?

Pet's info: Cat | Norwegian Forest Cat | Male | neutered | 9 years and 4 months old | 24 lbs

OUR LONG HAIRED CAT HAD A BIG HAIR MAT ON HIS SIDE. I REMOVED IT CAREFULLY, BUT I FOUND A SMALL TARE ON HIS SKIN. IT DOES NOT LOOK INFECTED, BUT HE IS LICKING IT AND MAKING IT BIGGER. WHAT SHOULD I DO? IT IS AS BIG AS A PENCIL ERASER

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Sparkey! If you can post a picture that would really help! If the wound is full thickness a few stitches may be needed. A vet exam is likely the best thing for him. Otherwise I would get an E-collar and have him wear it to prevent licking until the area has healed. You can clean it was water and a mild soap daily and apply a topical triple antibiotic cream as well. I wish Sparkey a speedy recovery!
