My dog's eye squints. Can prednisone or Cipro drops help an ulcer?

I was told earlier that my poor baby beaudreax might have an ulcer in his eye.. would that also make his opposite eye squint more? Also the poor guy was hit by a car a little over a week ago which is why I'm having a hard time with funds but I will try to get him to vet asap. But he's been taking prednisone (not drops orally) and rymadil and was also on gabafenton. Will the prednisone continue to help him with his eye? Also if I have Ciprofloxacin drops would that help any or would it harm him

Poor Beaudreax! He could have a problem with his other eye causing it to squint, like an ulcer as well or an infection. No, oral prednisone will not help his eye ulcer, nor will Ciprofloaxin drops. Treating an ulcer requires a specific topical eye specific medication which can only be prescribed by the vet. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends to afford the vet, and I can give you some resources that may help. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! That is an excellent question! The main reason is that the topical (to put in the eye) prednisolone does not have good systemic penetration so it has more of the anti-inflammatory effects of it without the immunosuppressive part of it. For this reason, we are not concerned about the infection getting worse. Good luck and have a great day!

If my dog does not have a corneal ulcer and maybe just a common eye infection, what treatment am i looking at? Will it be just a simple eye drop or will it be extensive treatment like surgery? Financially speaking too for the treatment. Is there any
An eye infection is generally treated with a topical eye drop, but these eye drops are generally prescription only and not available over the counter. It would be important to rule out a corneal ulcer first since the medications used for conjunctivitis (eye infection) can make a corneal ulcer much worse. A corneal ulcer can also become infected and get worse rapidly, and in severe cases dogs can lose their vision or their eye can become irreparably damaged so I would urge you to see your vet as soon as possible. Unfortunately it's impossible for us to comment on cost since this can vary so much based on location even within the same city, but I would imaging your veterinarian would want to perform an exam and then stain the eye to look for an ulcer. You could always call your veterinarian to get a cost estimate.

My dog is squinting and does not open his eye all the way. It looks red and the tissue in the inside of the lid looks swollen. I have some left over doggie Prednisone from when he was sick before, do you think this will help him?
I do not recommend giving any medications unless directed by your vet. He could have a corneal ulcer, infection, scratch, or foreign body in his eye. Your vet can do some testing to diagnose and then prescribe the best medication to treat. He may need an antibiotic to treat.

If stitches not dissolving caused the ulcer, and was on a steroid eye treatment can the ulcer be cured? With or without surgery?
Steroid treatment can cause worsening of the eye ulcer and are usually not used in these cases. Some pics of the eye and more detailed informations of the problem are needed to be able to give you specific answers.

May I know the name of the eyedrop that are considered best in order to heal corneal ulcer?
Eye ulcers are very complex and there is no one size fits all treatment. There are many options for treating ulcers and this is in part depends on the underlying cause of the ulcer (poor tear production/quality, inturned eyelids/eyelashes, scratches from other dogs/cats etc). The cornerstone of treatments are a lubricant drop plus an antibiotic drop (each applied 15mins apart every 2-6hours depending on severity), in many cases serum drops (prepared from the patients blood) are also used to promote healing and prevent further inflammation. Surgical treatment may also be required to clear damaged tissue from the surface of the ulcer and sometimes to protect the eye with flaps/contact lenses etc. I recommend a check up by your vet to ensure the most appropriate treatment is selected

Can watery running eyes be treated with prednisolone 10mg twice for one day ? My dog is having running watery only one right side eye and vet prescribed prednisone so can this treat and cure thi running eye?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Prednisone is an anti-inflammatory at low doses. If your vet suspects allergies as the cause the pred will help. Also the pred may help with rubbing or scratching of the eyes. Allergies are hard to “cure” if the underlyin cause isn’t found. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! If Brian is under Veterinary care and is receiving antibiotic eye drops prescribed by your vet then the ulcer should heal. Most uncomplicated ulcers heal with in 5-7 days. You should recheck with your Vet to be sure it has healed. I do not think cold air caused the ulcer or will make it worse. Dust, running into branches or other plant material may have caused the original injury so I would leash walk him and don't leave him outdoors long unsupervised until the eye has healed. Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. It looks like a corneal ulcer, I suspect Rex was scratched by the kitten. Please, do not use steroids as they are contraindicated in corneal wounds. Antibiotics eye drops is a much better idea. Please, call one of your local vets that is open and get the advise on what antibiotics eye drops are available in your country.

It looks like my pug is suffering from corneal ulceration. I'm so worried about him. Does this looks serious? Will this be okay with antibiotics? Is this a possible life threatening condition?
Based on this picture, that looks like a fairly superficial corneal ulceration. Oral antibiotics are not the treatment for this sort of issue, as direct ophthalmic medications will be required. The treatment will be aimed at preventing secondary infection,, reducing inflammation / pain, and mending the corneal surface. Otis will also need to wear a cone to make sure that he doesn't try and scratch at the eye and make matters worse for himself. This issue is not life-threatening, but the ulcer will definitely get worse if it is not treated quickly and properly, particularly if he is the kind of dog that will bother at it. If you've been to the vet already, he may have put a stain in the eye and then looked with a special light to see the actual depth of the ulcer. He will be able to tell you if the ulcer is actually superficial or if goes deeper than it appears in the picture. Hope this all makes sense.

Are you able see something In his eye he was scratching so when I look into it I found something like smudge on a lens so can you please check photos and confirm ne is it corneal ulcer or something more serious from last 10 days he started scratching
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bruno. I do not see an obvious scratch to the surface of his eye (ie. corneal ulcer). However, many times a drop of dye is needed on the eye and a special light is used to detect an ulcer. He would need to see his veterinarian for this test. From there, proper eye drops can be prescribed. It is worrisome that the eye has been bothering him for so long. Keep the E-collar on him in the meantime to prevent any self trauma. I hope this information helps!
