My dog's nose is turning black. Is it from a scratch or cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 years and 3 months old | 11.5 lbs

The bridge of my Amber's nose is turning black. I noticed 2 weeks ago, she had a tiny scratch just above her nose pad, maybe less than a cm long. I didn't think much of it she and her sister sometimes swipe at each other and it didn't seem to bothering her. In less than a week and half, the black spots started appearing above her nose pad, and I'm not sure if it is related to the scratch or is cancer from sunbathing, but would it appear that fast if it was cancer? Have booked vet for next week.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Amber! I'm glad you have an appointment set up. The change in her nose could be: viral, fungal, immune, mites, bacterial infection or cancerous. Your Vet will do an exam and consider a skin scrape, cytology and ring worm culture. Ultimately they may need to do a biopsy to get a diagnosis if she doesn't respond to treatment. I wish Amber the best!
