Why does my dog have blackhead-like bumps on her belly and armpits?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

Dog has "fields" of strange spiny things that resemble blackheads on her belly and just above the armpit areas if her back legs. This is a very recent development. I've never seen anything like this before. They seem to cause her no discomfort. She is a 4 year old mutt/Chihuahua mix in otherwise good health.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Judging from the pictures I suspect what you are seeing are blackheads. I would recommend using a shampoo called Dermabenz to help remove these. You can find this shampoo online quite easily and bathe twice weekly until resooved. If the condition does not improve or it worsens then I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.

Good questions. From the picture it looks like it may just be pigmentation changes. This can be caused by sun exposure, but also can be caused by chronic inflammation common with allergies. The bumps should be evaluated by a veterinarian to decide if they are concerning or not. Somtimes a needle aspirate done at the time of the appointment can give that information. I hope this helps!
