Sick pigeon with head bobbing and not eating. What to do before vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male

Dear You Recently I have found an unwell pigeon. The most important sign of his illness is this. Sometime he moves his head in a way that it seems there is a neurological problem (in the picture). But after some, he turn his head to the normal position. In addition I saw a slimy colorless, liquid thing in his throat. Also, he eats and drinks hardly, always with a wry neck. But then he turns normal. I gave him doxycycline and metronidazole. I will take him to a vet .How to help him now? Thank you

It appears that this pigeon is extremely ill. It is best to bring him to the vet you have in mind ASAP, or to a local wildlife rehab center that can see him as soon as possible and provide help. If you've already tried home treatment and he isn't improving, then seeking care ASAP is needed. Keeping him in a cage separate from other birds, with low perches and easy access to food and water may help, as well as keeping the area cool and dark to help avoid any undue stress until he can be seen by your vet.
