I have a Staffordshire bull terrier cross American bull dog and he's recently started limp on his front right paw, it came about after letting him run riot in a field, he has no cuts or thornes, but doesn't put any pressure on his paw, he even sits up with it lifted. Every now and then he puts it down but only for a few minutes at a time and yelps if he puts any pressure on it when getting up. It seems to cause no pain when laying, he has no pain in his sleep. What could cause this?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Funsta. Great job on checking his paw. That is the first thing I will do as well given the history of running in a field. Be sure to check his toe nails as well to see if he has cracked or broken one. If not, then he could have sustained a soft tissue injury such as a strain. He could also have joint pain from underlying arthritis or even bone pain. If he is otherwise normal, give him very strict rest for 24 hours. A lot of times this will improve the lameness. If he is acting sick or he does not improve with rest, then he will need to see his veterinarian. He may require an x-ray. In the meantime, do not give any over-the-counter pain medication as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!
