My puppy died of rabies. Do I need a vaccine after potential exposure?

Do I need rabies vaccination? I lost my puppy yesterday, the vet only confirmed she had rabies after death. I cared for her, may hav come in contact with her saliva at the time of death, but no bite, scratch or wound on my body. I washed my hands with soap after that, but still worried about an infection.

If Opal was diagnosed with rabies, yes I would have the rabies vaccination to be safe. You don't want to take that risk since rabies is fatal. Go see your doctor immediately to get the vaccine. Best of luck.

I would recommend that you do, especially if you are in an area that has a high incidence of rabies. That being said, I am not a human doctor and you should be consulting with your personal doctor. It always better to err on the side of caution in these cases since rabies is a 99.99% fatal disease. As for Eva, you need to get her rabies vaccination done as soon as possible. Best wishes.

All dogs should be vaccinated against rabies. If your pup was bitten, he should be examined by your veterinarian and treated as indicated. If you were bitten and the skin has been broken, seek medical attention from your own physician and discuss whether post exposure rabies vaccination is needed.

I am sorry to hear about Danny. He should immediately go to your vet and they should be notified of what has happened. How his case is handled will depend on regulations in your country. In the United States he would immediately get a rabies booster and be placed in a 6 month quarantine at an approved facility. Rabies is fatal in all cases and can be transmitted to people so you do not want to take any chances in these cases and should follow all the recommendations of the authorities. If you were in contact with this dog or touched wounds from this dog you should also notify your own doctor to see if they recommend treatment for yourself based on your encounter.

No you are fine. I'm glad you have had Apollo vaccinated against rabies. Rabies is spread from infected animals primarily by biting as the virus is in the saliva. The animals appear sick, disoriented and sometime drool as they lose the ability to swallow. Rabies is a fatal disease for animals and people that is why rabies vaccinations are so important. I would not be worried about this at all unless the mother died from rabies. The chances of her having rabies is extremely, extremely, extremely low. They cannot be born with rabies but they can get it from the mother's milk but the mother must be infected for this to happen. Did the mother have rabies? My suggestion is to keep her away from other animals that have not be vaccinated against rabies (including wild animals) until she is old enough to get her own vaccination. Hope this helps. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Any bite from an unvaccinated animal puts you at risk for Rabies. Getting antibodies from the mother's milk is not enough protection. If the puppy has been indoors and not bitten by an unvaccinated animal it is VERY unlikely that it has Rabies. IF Dachie has Rabies he will die or show symptoms with in 10 days, if that happens you should seek immediate rabies treatment. You should be fine to wait the 10 days. Isolate and quarantine the puppy. It is good you have had the Rabies vaccine and you are likely protected but everyone's immune system is different. If you were bitten by a rabid animal you would be treated regardless of your own vaccine history but it is less involved. Have all your dogs Rabies vaccinated when age appropriate. Hello. If the puppy was perfectly healthy, not acting sick at all, especially anything that resembled strange neurological behavior, then no. Plus, since the puppy was born in foster care, unless there was a chance it was previously bitten by a wild animal, there is no way it could have contracted rabies. It is very important that you take Rubal in to your vet for appropriate treatment, and have your son seen by a doctor right away. The doctor will be able to treat your son based on the rabies law and treatment protocol in your area, and your vet will be able to advise you on proper treatment protocol for Rubal. Please also make sure that you always keep your pets up to date on their rabies vaccinations, since rabies is relatively common in India and is deadly to humans and other mammals.

If your puppy comes from a reputable breeder, ie is not a street dog and has not been in contact with street dogs, then there is little chance that your puppy has rabies. If your puppy comes from a street dog litter or had contact with street dogs, then I think your father needs to check with a doctor whether he should have the rabies vaccination and how many (the regular 3 or 5 injections within a week).

Hello, and thanks for your question. I'm wondering if the rabies vaccine product or protocol is a bit different in India vs the United States. Our typical protocol with a previously vaccinated (up-to-date) dog who may have been exposed to a rabid animal (such as a wild animal or unvaccinated dog) is to booster the dog immediately with another rabies vaccine - just once....and then get back on the standard vaccine schedule of every 3 years. We don't typically do the multi-dose PEP you're describing, although that protocol would be given to people with exposure. However, rabies is much more endemic in your area - so I would defer to the advice of your local vet who treats far more rabies exposure cases than we would. If the original plan (prior to your dog's second altercation with another stray) was to give the two additional shots on the 4th and 5th, then I would probably stick with this plan. All vaccines can carry a small risk of reaction - but there's no "overdose" per say. A
