My dog won't eat kibble but eats treats. What's wrong? Homemade food?

Hi, my dog stopped eating her food that I buy in stores. Could you tell me what could cause that and which homemade food I could make for her instead? She eats human food and dog treats so she shouldn't be ill,

Oh no, that's not good that Mimi has stopped eating her food. It could be that she isn't feeling well or that she has a dental problem. A check up with the vet would be a good idea. Homemade diets are difficult to make to ensure that the dog's nutritional needs are met. I can give you links to two websites that provide homemade diet recipes for dogs. I would give it a bit more time to see if he goes back to eating normally. In the meantime you may want to try giving him a probiotic just in case his stomach/intestines are bit uneasy. I recommend Fortiflora - it is by far the best probiotic. As a side note, I have no issue with people making home-cooked food but it is not balanced for a dog (ie: minerals and nutrients that a dog needs). You really need to get that sorted out. Creating a balanced homemade diet for a dog is actually fairly complicated - for this reason, it's best to consult with a veterinary nutritionist to help you formulate a diet for him if you really want to do this. If this isn't an option for you, the website www.balanceit.com is a good starting point that will walk you through the basics of creating a diet. Alternatively, you could also try feeding a good quality canned dog food that is already complete and nutritionally balanced - many dogs prefer canned food and will eat it more readily than dry kibble.

My dog seems disinterested in her food. She is acting normal and eats treats but she’ll sniff her food and walk away. We give her some dry mixed with some wet. Any advice?
Hello, some dogs do seem to develop adversions to some foods. Often, if you limit the treats, they will come back to the food in a couple of days. Will she eat the canned? You might also try a soft moist food or one of the refrigerated brands like Bil Jac or FreshPet. If she continues to refuse all food, you will need to see your vet to try & get an answer as to why she refuses to eat. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

My yorkie mix does not like her kibble. .any brand. She steals the cat kibble though. She loves veggies (no onion) and cooked ground beef, turkey, and chicken. Will this be enough for her to stay healthy
The problem with homemade diets is that they are very difficult to get the correct balance of nutrients Kiki needs to stay healthy, and having just veggies and meat will not be enough. My dog has lost her appetite for her food but eats her treats fine
Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! This may be because she no longer likes her dog food. I would recommend switching to a different diet and transitioning over a 7-10 day period. It may also be that she does not like the texture of the food as well. I would also offer canned and dry food to see if this helps increase her appetite. If her appetite continues to dwindle, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her and have further testing done. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

She won’t eat normal dog food, only her treats. It’s been like that for about a year now, and the issue is she is still in perfect health physically with no signs of any pain or sickness or anything. She weighs right about 50lbs and is very muscular.
This is certainly an anomaly and not typical of a a sustainable diet. Over time, this will affect her organs in a big way, because treats are not a balanced diet for pets. Although she does look ok externally, her bloodwork may reveal all kinds of nutritional deficiencies. I would try to slowly ease her back on a healthy dog food and try to stick with proteins that she likes (i.e. chicken, beef, turkey, etc). I would also try other brands of foods that are highly palatable if you have not done so already, such as Royal Canin, Purina, Victor or Hill's Science diet. You can also try adding canned food in with the dry kibble if she prefers that more. And lastly it is ok to cook for your pet as long as the meal is pet approved and balanced. Balanceit.com and Pet diets (google search) should help you formulate a daily meal for her that will support her overall health and well-being. Hi.. Hope you are doing good:) Mini has stopped eating her dry food.. She is eating only rice with chicken or veggies or egg.. Is it okay if I just feed her these things? Also which leafy greens are safe for her?
What Mini has done is train you to feed her what she wants, when she wants it. Her present diet is neither healthy nor balanced. To get her back on to dog food, start transitioning her back to her kibble. Each day, decrease the amount of chicken/veggies/egg and increase the amount of kibble. Prepare her food at the same time(s) each day. Dog thrive on routine. Leave her food down for 30 minutes before picking it up whether she has eaten or not or even if she has picked out the table food. Do not feed her anything else between meals. Be firm and be consistent. She will not starve. She will eat when she gets hungry and sees no table food is forthcoming. You can mix in some warm water to stimulate her appetite.

It is best to give pets a balanced diet, and it does not matter the source. You can go with homecooked food, as long as it is balanced and vet approved. Therefore I would recommend using resources like dog cook books or the following websites to learn how to do this properly, so that you are not making food that is deficient in vital vitamins and minerals that he needs. balanceit.com petdiets.com You can also look on Amazon.com for recipe books for dogs. The boiled chicken, egg and rice isn't going to be good long term, because pet need vegetables in their diet. I hope this helps answer your question! If she has checked out healthy you may want to stop all the "extras" such as people food and treats to encourage Mini to eat her actual food. Dogs, just like people, can become picky eaters and if given the option of snacks and people food instead of healthy balanced meals, they will choose that. Giving her a few days where you set down only her food for 15 minutes, then pick it up and trying again a few hours later will encourage her to start trying her food again. If she truly does not want to eat anything, or become more lethargic, and has obvious signs of illness such as vomiting, diarrhea, etc, then a more thorough workup from your vet is a good idea.

My dog has been refusing meals lately. I've tried different wet foods and kibbles. She gets plenty of exercise and is only 3. No visible health problems. What do you recommend I do?
I am sorry to hear Scully isn't eating well on her own. It is hard to say what is going on with Scully without knowing more details. Some dogs may get picky about their food and wait for their owners to put something tasty on top of their normal food. Some dogs refuse to eat if their stomach is upset. I would want to make sure there isn't something going on internally with Scully. She could have some gastrointestinal issues that are causing her to not feel well and not want to eat, like intestinal parasites. I would recommend you take her to your vet to be evaluated. In the mean time, you could try a bland diet, like boiled chicken and rice, as that is easily digested and easy on the stomach. I also like probiotics for dogs as this can help restore the balance of intestinal bacteria and often can entice dogs to eat as many of the canine ones are flavored. I hope Scully is back to her normal self and normal meal routine very soon!
