My dog's brother had hereditary heart disease. Is my dog at risk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 7 years and 3 months old | 60 lbs

My dog’s brother was just diagnosed (and died) of dilated cardiomyopathy which the vet said is hereditary. Should I get my dog checked out? If so, how expensive is an appointment checking for this? I think he’s always been this way, but he breaths at a much faster rate than my other pup even when he’s just been resting and will pant even when he has been relaxing for hours which was the first symptom the vet pointed out in his brother.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog's brother. This is a hereditary condition, so it's good to have your dog checked by a vet - especially if you feel his breathing is a bit fast. Sometimes, there can be evidence of heart disease detected at physical exam, but x-rays, EKG and sometimes echocardiography is needed to diagnose the specific condition. This can cost anywhere from $150 to $500 depending on the testing done and any involvement of specialists. We can usually work within your budget though, so it's good to inform your vet how much you are willing to spend. I hope that helps and all is well with Gus.
