Dog constantly scratching belly, meds not working. What's the cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 75 lbs

My dog constantly bites and scratches at his belly. He’s been at the vet multiple times since November and they keep giving him meds to clear up the rash and it goes away but once the meds are gone he ends up scratching again and this time is by far the worst. He just finished a round of prednisone which did nothing for him, we were told to start him on a daily dose of Benadryl but I’m nervous about all the meds. We’ve changed food, detergents, etc multiple times! No one knows the cause ! Help!

Poor Oak! This is likely an environmental allergy to something outside. Benadryl is super safe and wont hurt to try but the way it looks it probably wont help much. Since the problem continues to return I would talk to tour vet about trying a long term allergy medicine like apoquel. It is much safer than prednisone long term and has been a game changer for a lot of my allergy dogs. See link below for benadryl dosing if you want to try it first. I hope this helps! https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/
