Why are my young guinea pigs constantly hungry? Are they growing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | unneutered | 2.8 lbs

My 2 guinea pigs seem to be constantly hungry. I feed them the recommended cup of fresh vegetables, the 1/8 cup of pellets and some hay but before the end of the day they go crazy, crying and chewing and won't rest until they are fed again. Feeding that would usually consist of some additional hay or maybe some carrot. Am I doing something wrong or is it just their additional needs as they grow?

If your guinea pigs are still young (under a year) then they are probably just needing extra calories because they are growing. I would recommend to offer them as much fresh hay as they want. Continue to restrict the amount of pellets because overfeeding them can cause unwanted weight gain. you can add in extra veggies as needed. I hope this helps!
