My rabbit's bottom is inflamed with bedding stuck. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 11 months old

I was cleaning out her cage and when I picked her up I thought there was some bedding stuck to her bottom, then I turned her over and was frightened by what I saw. It seems that there is bedding stuck in her vagina and her vagina is VERY inflamed. I sat her in like warm water and some bedding came out but it's still very much inflamed and I'm sure it's infected. I have made an appointment for her,but I would greatly appreciate any information you may have. Thank you.

Infection and inflammation of the skin around the vulva in female rabbits can be fairly common. So far, you did the right thing by gently cleansing the area. Your veterinarian will likely need to clip and clean the area of inflammed skin and will probably prescribe some antibiotics and possibly a topical ointment to help the skin heal. Try to keep the area as clean and dry as possible. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
