Is my dog's gum epulis causing one-sided nasal discharge and sneezing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 43 lbs

My dog has been sneezing and having nasal discharge for a while, our vet has tried antibiotics and steroids, but the discharge keeps coming back. We went to an internist who wants to scope, catscan and biopsy $$$$$, but neither of these vets have mentioned the large epulis on his gum might be the problem. The nose discharge is in the nostril on the same side as the epulis. Could that be the problem, should we get that removed before all this other surgery and see if that works?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If nasal discharge is on one side and the pet is also sneezing a tooth can be the problem. I doubt it is the epulis per se. If it is a tooth is is usually from a tooth root abscess. It isn't unreasonable to have a dental done where dental X-ray is available and have all the teeth on that side X-rayed to check for a tooth root abscess. If one is found it would be removed and you can see if his symptoms resolve. You just need to be prepared for the internists recommendations if it isn't the answer. I wish Wiley the best!
