Why is my dog hacking up mucus and regurgitating undigested food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 1 month old | 100 lbs

My 100lb dane mix has had issues since February. He hacks up mucus with or without food at various times throughout the day. Some days it will go 30hrs between the episodes and fine otherwise. The vet thought it was pneumonia, we put him on clavamox for 2 weeks. No temp. He goes up and down with recovery. My original thought was something wrong with the epiglottis or esophagus as he regergitates intact food 10 hours later. I think it’s somehow stuck or sitting in the esophagus. Any ideas?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Burger. The first step is to determine if he is vomiting or regurgitating as they have different causes. Vomiting is signified by retching and abdominal contractions. There may be signs of nausea that precede an episode. Regurgitation is the passive expulsion of esophageal or stomach contents. The material will slip up often times surprising the animal. You can try to video an episode to show your veterinarian. If he is regurgitating you will want to take chest x-rays to look at the size and shape of his esophagus. A dilated esophagus known as megaesophagus can result in pneumonia on the animal frequently chokes on its food. I hope this information gives you a starting point!
